Our Yaracuy State

Yaracuy is one of the 23 States of Venezuela, located in the centroccidental part of the country. Bordered to the North with Falcón, Portuguesa and Cojedes, South to the West with Lara and Carabobo and Cojedes.

Its geography is mountainous because over there ends the cordillera of the Andes and starts the cordillera of the Costa. The main towns are San Felipe, Yaritagua, Chivacoa, Nirgua, Cocorote, Urachiche y Aroa.


The Yaracuy River Valley was called by the natives Uadabacoa, which in their language means “groves site”. Caquetios, Jiraharas and Gayones, were the tribes that lived in Yaracuy before the arrival of the Spaniards.

The written history of Yaracuy begins in 1530, with the passage of German Nicolas Federman, Deputy chief of Governor Weltzer. In his travelogue by belzaresca jurisdiction, he called it the Valley of the Ladies, because the female indigenous who were there, were slender and beautiful.

During the colony, was integrated to the province of Caracas. The Constitution of 1811 linked it to Barquisimeto; in the Constitution sanctioned on 23 June, 1824 has been awarded to the province of Carabobo; by the May 29, 1832 went back to the province of Barquisimeto, and on March 15, 1855 for the first time is given its own status as a province of Yaracuy, comprising the cantons of San Felipe, Yaritagua and Nirgua, with capital San Felipe; It was the second national entity that is designated with the name of State with the Federal war come and it occurs in 1859, but it was only made official with the triumph of the revolution in 1864. As declared in the 1879 Plenipotentiary Congress, the reduction of the states became part of the North Western State with Barquisimeto and Falcon, but this territorial division came only until 1881 that was called Great State Lara, subdivided into Barquisimeto Section and Yaracuy Section. Early in 1892, it regained its autonomy to lose it on 28 December of that same year, when it became incorporated again into Barquisimeto. On April 22, 1899 Congress agreed the twenty Federal States, which include the Yaracuy State, incorporating the town of Nirgua, which then belonged to Carabobo; Since then there has been no more changes and the Yaracuy enjoys full autonomy.


The main economic activity is agriculture. Vegetable agricultural products such as corn, banana, black bean, sugar cane, coffee, sorghum , plantains, avocados, oranges and other fruits in the vegetable farming sector. In the livestock sector are the breeding of cattle, pigs and poultry. The bank, in economic terms, produces goods and services with greater intensity for which internal circulation to neighboring states. Forest resources are carob, bucare, cedar, jabillo, mijao, oak, saman; mineral resources: antimony, clay, sand, limestone, copper, gravel, dolomite, marble, gold, pyrite, silver, lead, titanium, gypsum.
